Our Parents’ Perception of Scouting
In preparation for our District Conference, we conducted a survey with parents and guardians of both our current youth members and those on the waiting lists to join.
In the survey, we used the Net Promotor Score for some of the questions.
Moving On
How likely will your young person go on to [Cub] Scouts at age [8]?
Recommendation
How likely are you to recommend [Cub] Scouts to a friend?
More badges = Higher Score
When reviewing the results we found a 68% positive correlation coefficient between the number of badges the young person had received and the recommendation NPS.
This date demonstrates that the more badges a young person receives, the more likely the parent/guardian is to recommend scouting to their friends.
Volunteering
Have you ever been confused about who is a volunteer and who is a paid member of staff in Scouting?
There are over 110 volunteers in Brent District, how many paid members of staff do you think we have in Brent?
Average: 17.5
Median: 10
Maximum: 80
At the time of the survey we had 1 full-time and two part-time members of staff, this follows from the previous question that many more parents than we expected then our leaders are paid staff, rather than volunteers.
Do you think the following roles are volunteers or paid staff?
The result of this question suggests that the further the role is from regular contact with a parent the more likely they are to think it is paid.
Conclusions
From this survey, we have concluded that we need to be clearer about who is a volunteer and who is an employee. To do this we recommend everyone includes the following statement in their email signatures:
I am a volunteer, could you volunteer too?
