World Scout Jamboree Roadshows
To all Scouts and Explorers born between 22nd July 2005 and 31st July 2009 for the World Scout Jamboree; and those born between 16th August 2005 and 4th August 2009 for the Haarlem Jamborette.
Dear Scout / Explorer!
If you didn’t know already, the 25th World Scout Jamboree (WSJ) is in SaeManGeum, South Korea in 2023! We would love to invite you to apply to join us at the Jamboree! This is an incredible opportunity to join the largest Scouting event in the world with over 40,000 Scouts and Guides from over 150 countries and territories around the world. We are searching for 72 enthusiastic Scouts and Explorers to represent the Greater London Middlesex West County in South Korea; are you ready for an adventure of a lifetime?
The Jamboree itself will take place from the 1st to the 12th August 2023. However, this is likely to be supplemented by arriving a couple of days in advance with the rest of the UK contingent in Seoul, the capital of South Korea, before moving to the Jamboree site at SaeManGeum in the South for the main event. This is usually followed by a few days of Hosted Hospitality (HoHo) in one of several locations with other Scouting groups (to be confirmed). The trip is therefore likely to extend to 3 weeks in total.
As well as the World Scout Jamboree, we are also looking for a further 36 Scouts and Explorers to be part of the Great London Middlesex West unit at the Haarlem Jamborette (HJ), near Amsterdam in Holland. The Jamborette runs from August 5th to 16th August 2023, we plan to travel the day before and get home the day after. Although smaller than the World Scout Jamboree, you can expect to see thousands of Scouts from over 20 countries.
Our fantastic leadership team will be arranging roadshows in each district during September and October 2021, where we will provide further information about the Jamboree and Jamborette and you can ask us any burning questions that you may have. Details of the roadshows are included in the FAQ’s below.
Unfortunately, the dates mean that you will be unable to attend both events. If you are interested in attending either event, please complete the online application form, which will close on October 31st 2021, and we will contact you about attending a selection day at PACCAR camp site, on either the 6th, 7th, 20th or 21st November 2021. We will accept both written and recorded applications; however it is imperative that all questions are answered within the allowed word count.

What is a World Scout Jamboree?
A World Scout Jamboree is a gathering of Scouts from almost every country that happens every four years. It will be the adventure of a lifetime for those lucky enough to attend!
It’s bigger than the Olympics, both in number of participants and in the number of countries represented. You’ll live and take part in activities alongside Scouts from all over the world, making new friends and experiencing cultures that you may never knew existed.
The Jamboree will most likely begin with a pre-Jamboree experience. This will likely be a couple of days where all the UK Units from the Jamboree will get together to party before they arrive at the Jamboree itself. Then at the Jamboree site there will be an Opening Ceremony - a party like you've never been to before! Then you'll take part in loads of different activities for 7 or 8 days. The activities are a real mix of physical, social, and educational, but definitely all fun! You'll also get the chance to go off site and see a bit of South Korea itself, meeting local Scouts to find out what their way of Scouting is like.
What is a Jamboree Contingent?
Participants attend a World Scout Jamboree as part of a Jamboree Contingent. The UK Jamboree Contingent is made up of Units of 36 young people (4 patrols of 9) and four adult Leaders. Our County is sending two full units – 72 young people (8 patrols) and 8 leaders.
What is the Jamborette
The Jamborette is a mini-Jamboree and takes place every four years in Holland. In 2019 there were around 3,00 Scouts representing 29 Countries. As well as the Jamborette itself, we will be holding some weekend camps and activity days so that everyone can get to know each other. To take part in the GLMW unit you will need to be in the Explorer age range (14 to 18) at the time of the Jamborette.
The cost of the Jamborette is £1,000 per person, and includes:
Unit meetings and camps during 2022 and 2023;
Travel to and from the Jamborette;
The Jamborette camp including camping accommodation and food
A Jamborette Scarf and Tee-shirt
A chance to experience international Scouting
When are the Roadshows?

The roadshows are an excellent opportunity for you and your parents to find out the latest information about the Jamboree and the application process and to ask any questions that you may have.
We will also hold an online roadshow for those who cannot make the main event. Details of the online event will be posted on the above website.
How will young people be selected to attend the Jamboree / Jamborette?
You must have been born between 00:01 on the 22nd July 2005 and 23:59 on the 31st July 2009 in order to attend the WSJ, and between the 16th August 2005 and the 4th August 2009 to attend the HJ. There are no exceptions to this.
You will be 14-17 at the time of the event. If you turn 18 during the WSJ you will count as a Young Person for the remainder of the event.
We aim to select Scouts and Explorers who are enthusiastic about scouting and the Jamboree events.
The objectives of the selection process are to identify Young People who will:
Benefit from the opportunity;
Be ambassadors for our county and UK Scouting;
Bring something of their experience back to enrich Scouting on their return – i.e. there should be a legacy beyond their own personal experience.
Our selection criteria will include the following about you when deciding whether or not you are the best candidate to attend the Jamboree/Jamborette. Are you:
An enthusiastic Scout/Explorer and Interested in world scouting?;
Able to work in a team?;
Committed to the jamboree experience including the unit meetings and camps?;
Able to take responsibility for yourself; remember you will have to cope with up to 3 weeks away for the WSJ and 2 weeks away for the HJ including significant travel, time zones, physical and emotional stress, minimum 12 days camping and possibly a further hospitality element with a local Scout group?
The jamboree is a physically, mentally, and emotionally demanding experience. The venue for the jamboree covers a large area and you will cover large distances daily moving around the site. you should be aware of the nature of what is expected and be confident that you can contribute to all aspects of the jamboree experience.
Selection days
Once we have received your application by the end of October, we will invite you to attend a selection event on either the 6th or the 7th or the 20th or 21st November 2021. Which day you will attend will be circulated by your District in due course. If you can’t attend on your nominated day don’t worry, we will make arrangements for you to attend a different day.
What if I have additional needs or a disability?
This will not be seen as a barrier to your potential participation, but please speak to us about what reasonable adjustments we can make for you to attend before you apply. You can email us to ask! We have had another adult come on a Jamboree in the past to support a Young Person’s attendance, so anything can be done with some thought and creativity.
What can I expect from this journey?
Once you’ve been through the application process and accepted as a Jamboree Attendee, you’ll be joining one of two units with 34 other Explorers from around the County to make some friendships that will last a lifetime. Your unit will meet regularly in the run up to the Jamboree, for unit meetings, fundraising events and camps to prepare you for your adventures – are you ready?
How much does it cost and what’s included in the cost?
The price hasn’t been finalised yet, but as an indication, the last Jamboree in the United States in 2019 cost £3,950 for GLMW participants. The bulk of this price covers the UK Contingent Fee, the remainder goes into the unit meetings, camps and other experiences that are part of being a Jamboree Unit Member.
For this price you get:
Unit meetings and camps during 2022 and 2023;
Travel to and from the Jamboree;
All main meals and accommodation for the duration of the Jamboree.
Unit equipment (including sleeping tents, cooking equipment and dining accommodation);
Personal kit (including Uniform, badges, scarf, woggle, day-sac and hold all);
A post-Jamboree visit in South Korea to another location for several days;
A post-Jamboree Reunion event
A truly unique experience... priceless!
How do I apply?
We are accepting two types of application, written or video. If you submit a video application, you still need to fill out the application form with your personal details but leave out the questions on page 3 (15-20), and record these instead (plus anything else you want from the form!).
Please note that every question needs to be answered, and regardless of which submission method chosen the word count needs to be adhered to.

It is important to note that it is a serious commitment to your Unit and Scouting practice. There will be fundraising and Unit meetings that are compulsory to attend. Please bear this in mind when of applying!
Your parents must be aware you have made an application, and this must be acknowledged on the form. Applications made without parental consent will be rejected. However, you must complete the
form yourself; there is no such thing as a ‘correct answer’, we want to get to know you!
Parents! We can tell if you’ve filled out the form, and it doesn’t help their application when we come to ask them about it, so please let them complete it themselves!
Please complete this and submit by the 31st October 2021. Late applications will not be considered.
What if I’m successful?
We’ll inform all applicants of our decision in early December 2021. If you are successful, then you’ll be sent further information and invited to attend the Unit meetings starting in January 2022. The meetings will be once a month on Sundays for the WSJ. We’ll also have three weekend camps before the Jamboree itself. The first camp is likely to be at the end of March 2021.
For the Jamborette there are two weekend camps plus three activity days planned throughout 2022 and 2023, with further details to be communicated in due course.
Please note that you would be expected to attend all the meetings unless there is a good reason for not doing so. You might take away from the opportunity of another scout if you do not regularly attend!
